The Tile Museum

A typeface drawn from five centuries of painted letters.

The museum's collection runs from the fifteenth century to last year, and almost every panel carries lettering by someone who was not a letterer. I spent a winter drawing from those panels, keeping the wobble where it was honest and losing it where it was only tired.

The result is a family of four weights that sets a wall label and a building sign in the same voice. The museum owns it outright, which is how it should be.
